Noah's Ark (12): de/the Ark

Dit is dan de twaalfde aflevering, met het laatste blok van Lynette Andersons Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM - de ark zelf, de pièce de résistance. Lynette heeft inmiddels een Flickrgroep geopend waar je afgewerkte quilts kan zien. Voorlopig staan er nog maar vijf quilts op - terwijl de patroontjes toch zo'n 5700 keer gedowload zijn! Ik heb zelf ook nog wel wat werk voor mijn quilt af is.
De Ark spreekt tot de verbeelding: je hebt Ark-speelgoed, Ark-stof, Ark-graffiti, Ark-beelden.
Deze site toont dat de Ark een gewild onderdeel van themaparken was.

En deze foto vind ik ook geweldig, het lijkt wel of de vrouw in plaats van een tuinkabouter of grot van Lourdes een reuzachtige ark heeft in haar tuin ...
At last the twelfth and last scene of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM - the ark itself, the 'pièce de résistance'. Lynette opened a Flickr group where you can find some finished quilts. At present there are only five finished quilts - though the patterns have been downloaded some 5700 keer times! My quilt still needs some work before I can show it.
The Ark spreaks to the imagination: you have Ark-toys, Ark-fabrics, Ark-graffiti, Ark-statues. As you can seen on this site the Ark was a popular part of theme parks.
And the woman on this photo seems to have a gigantic Ark in her front yard instead of a garden gnome or Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto ...

Noah's Ark (11): slakken & insecten / snails & insects

Het elfde tafereeltje van Lynette Andersons Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM is erg klein en vol kleine beestjes. De slakken zien er bekoorlijker uit dan de glibberige gevallen die mijn tuin verwoesten. Ik hoop in de zomer wel weer veel bijen te zien op mijn bloeiende klimop. Albert Einstein overdreef misschien toen hij stelde dat de mensheid nog maar vier jaar zou hebben na het uitsterven van de bijen. Feit is dat bijen voor 70 à 80 procent instaan voor het bestuiven van de appels, peren, aardbeien, augurken enz. Ze hebben dus een uitermate belangrijkste taak voor de instandhouding van de voeding van de mensheid.
De BOM liep eigenlijk in 2008 maar ik heb hem om twee redenen gedateerd op 2009. De quilt zal dan pas helemaal afgewerkt zijn (nu snel stofjes kopen en de patchwork afmaken!). En ik hoop dat de lieveheersbeestjes in dit tafereeltje ervoor zorgen dat 2009 een gelukkiger jaar wordt dan 2008. Zodat de patchwork de bestemming kan krijgen die ik voor ogen heb ...
Het borduren is nu dus klaar - in een volgend bericht nog iets over het laatste tafereeltje, de 'piece de résistance', de Ark zelf.
The eleventh scene of Lynette Andersons Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM is very small and crowded with small creatures. The snails look sweeter than the slimy monsters that destroy my garden. However, I hope to see this summer a lot of bees in my thriving ivy. Albert Einstein may have exaggerated when he predicted that if the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. The fact is that bees are for 70 to 80 percent responsible for the pollination of apples, pears, strawberries, cucumbers, etc. They have an extremely important task for the maintenance of the diet of mankind.
The BOM was a project that ran in 2008 but I dated it 2009 for two reasons. The quilt will only be completely finished this year (now quickly buy the assorted fabrics and finish the patchwork!). And I hope the ladybirds in this scene will make 2009 a happier year than 2008. So that the patchwork can have the destination I have in mind ...

Noah's Ark (10): leeuwen/lions

Nu dit tiende tafereeltje van Lynette Andersons Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM af is, ben ik weer helemaal bij. Nog twee tafereeltjes te gaan en dan is het project afgelopen. Jammer!
De leeuwen - die er allesbehalve gevaarlijk uitzien - doen mij denken aan een anekdote van een paar jaren geleden. Een geschrokken Zeistenaar belde de politie dat hij een leeuw - waarschijnlijk ontvlucht uit het nabije circus - had zien rondlopen. De politie rukte meteen uit met groot materieel. Helikopters speurden de omgeving af. Auto's met megafoons waarschuwden de omwonenden binnen te blijven om niet verscheurd te worden door het vervaarlijke beest. Uiteindelijk werd de leeuw gevonden. Alleen, het bleek een man in leeuwenpak te zijn op weg naar een feestje ....

The lions – who look anything but dangerous - remind me of an anecdote I read a few years ago. A shocked inhabitant of Zeist called the police with the message that he had spotted a lion - probably escaped from the nearby circus. The police left immediately with heavy equipment. Helicopters searched the area. Cars with megaphones warned the residents to stay inside in order not to be torn apart by the dangerous animal. Eventually, the lion was found. Only, it turned out to be a man in a lion costume heading for a party ....

Noah's ark (9): pi/enguins {2008->2009}

Op het negende tafereeltje van Lynette Andersons Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM staan twee verliefde pinguïns. Ik heb niets met pinguïns maar toeval of niet, de laatste tijd duiken ze overal op. Eerst kreeg ik een mailtje uit Zuid-Afrika over een uitstapje met 'pikkewijn en dolfijn' in de buurt van Kaapstad. Ik dacht dat 'pikkewijn' een heerlijke Kaapse wijn was maar het blijkt het Afrikaanse woord voor pinguïn te zijn. Volgens Wikipedia werd deze benaming vroeger ook in het Nederlands gebruikt. Wist jij trouwens dat er pinguïns rondlopen in Afrika??? Ik niet!!
Dan kreeg ik met Sinterklaas mooie Penguin Pencils van mijn dochter.
Bij haar zag ik een grappige gebreide pinguïn. En Martha Stewart laat zien hoe je met dennenappels een wintertafereeltje met pinguïns kan toveren. Heel toepasselijk voor deze koude dagen ...
Samen met de pinguïns wuif ik het jaar uit en wens iedereen een prettige jaarwisseling en een mooi en creatief 2009. Dankjewel voor al de lieve en attente berichtjes van het voorbije jaar of voor alle stille bezoeken aan mijn blog. Mijn voorbije jaar werd er veel rijker door ....
The ninth scene of Lynette Anderson’s Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM shows two penguins-in-love. Is it a coincidence that penguins seem to pop op everywhere? First, I got an email from South Africa on a trip with ‘pikkewijn en dolfijn (dolphin)’ near Cape Town. First I thought 'pikkewijn' was a delicious wine frome the Cape Vineyards but it turned out to be the word for penguin in Afrikaans. According to Wikipedia it even was the old word for penguin in Dutch. Did you know that there are penguins walking around in Africa? Not me!
Then my daughter gave me these pretty Penguin Pencils as a ‘Sinterklaas’ present.
Here I saw a most funny knitted penguin. And Martha Stewart shows how to create a lovely winter scene with skating penguins using pinecones. Very appropriate for these cold days ...
Together with the penguins I wave a goodbye to the past year. I wish everyone a happy New Year and a beautiful and creative 2009. Thanks for all the friendly and thoughtful messages of the past year or the quiet visits to my blog. They made my live a lot richer ...

Noah's ark (8): regenboog/rainbow

Het achtste tafereeltje van Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM is eenvoudig en mooi. De regenboog is het symbool van hoop, vrede en harmonie. Na de zondvloed beloofde God nooit meer een zondvloed over de aarde te brengen. Als teken van dit verbond liet hij de eerste regenboog in de wolken verschijnen. Nog steeds lijken regenbogen groeten uit een andere wereld, Als zich in de avondspits plots een regenboog aftekent tegen de grijze regenlucht ben je blij dat je de kleurenpracht in de trage file rustig kan bewonderen.
Als kind was ik erg onder de indruk van de regenbogen die Pollyanna in de film Pollyanna met kristallen prisma’s op de muur toverde. Ik was helemaal verrukt toen bleek dat mijn eigen oma ook zo'n kristallen toverprisma’s in haar pronkkast bewaarde ...

The eighth scene of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM is simple but beautiful. The rainbow is a symbol of hope, peace and harmony. After the flood God promised never again to visit a deluge upon all the world, and placed the first rainbow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant. Rainbows still seem like greetings from another world. When in the evening suddenly a rainbow emerges in the gray and rainy sky you are glad that the traffic jam gives you the opportunity to admire the magnificent colors. As a child I was very impressed with the rainbows that Pollyanna conjured on the wall in the movie Pollyanna. I was absolutely delighted when I discovered that my own grandmother kept some magic crystal prisms in her cabinet ...

Noah's ark (7): vogels & schildpadden/birds & turtles

Ik loop wat achter met Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM. Maar vandaag heb ik het tafereeltje met de schildpadden en de volgels afgewerkt. Toen ik de tekening zag moest ik meteen denken aan de volgende passage in Stephen Hawking's boek A Brief History of Time:
"Een bekende wetenschapper (volgens sommigen was het Bertrand Russell) gaf eens een openbare lezing over sterrenkunde. Hij beschreef hoe de aarde draait rond de zon en hoe de zon, op haar beurt rond het centrum van een uitgebreide collectie van sterren, het melkwegstelsel, draait. Aan het eind van het college, stond een oude dame achterin de zaal op en zei: "Wat u ons heeft verteld is onzin. De wereld is een vlakke plaat die steunt op de rug van een reusachtige schildpad." De wetenschapper glimlachte superieur en antwoordde, "En waarop staat de schildpad dan?" "Je bent erg slim, jongeman, heel slim," zei de oude dame. "Maar het zijn schildpadden tot helemaal naar beneden!"

I'm trying to catch up again with Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM. Today I finished the scene with the turtles and birds. When seeing the picture immediately the following passage of Stephen Hawking's book A Brief History of Time came to my mind:
“ A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"

Noah's ark (6): Noah & giraffen/giraffes

Ik was even blijven steken in de vele Franse knoopjes van Noach's baard maar nu is het zesde tafereeltje van Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM toch af. Ik vind het werkelijk prachtig ontworpen: de giraffen die een beschermende boog vormen rond Noach, de blaadjes bovenaan die diepte geven. En vooral de kat die zich aandoenlijk dicht tegen Noach aanvlijt (de dieren kwamen paarsgewijs aan boord van de ark, de andere kat - poes of kater - moet dus even ergens anders zijn).
Tijdens het borduren bedacht ik dat bij een fundamentalistische interpretatie van de bijbel, Noach eigenlijk mijn betbetbet***overgrootvader is. Volgens de bijbel stammen alle mensen af van de drie zonen van Noach. De Semieten van Sem, de mensen in Afrika en Kanaän van Cham, en de Europeanen van Jafeth. Volgens de koran had Noach overigens nog een vierde zoon - die was echter fataal eigenwijs: hij wilde zijn toevlucht niet aan boord van de ark maar op een berg zoeken. Foute inschatting ...
Als stamvader is Noach zeker oke, zowel karakterieel als fysiek. Hij werd om zijn rechtschapenheid gered van de zondvloed en had prima genetisch materiaal: hij was 350 toen de zondvloed begon en 950 toen hij stierf ...
I was stuck for some time in the many French knots of Noah's beard, but today I finally finished the sixth scene of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM. As always it is beautifully designed with the giraffes forming a protective arm around Noah and the top leaves giving depth. I especially love the cat touchingly hugging Noah (the animals boarded the ark in pairs, I suppose the other cat is somewhere else at this moment).
While embroidering I realised that in a fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible, Noah actually is my grandgrandgrand***father. According to the Bible all people stem from the three sons of Noah. The Semites from Shem, the people of Africa and Canaan from Cham, and the Europeans from Jafeth. According to the Koran, Noah had a fourth son - who was fatally stubborn: he did not embark on the ark but looked for a mountain refuge. Incorrect assessment ...
As an ancestor Noah is certainly okay. He had a good character: he was saved from the deluge because of his honesty. Apparently he also had good genetic material: he was 350 when the deluge began and 950 when he died ...

Ark van Noah (5): Olifanten / Elephants

Zondag in mijn zomertuin eindelijk het vijfde tafereeltje van Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM afgewerkt. Bij het borduren van de olifanten met het Indische kleed op de rug, moest ik denken aan Het bezoek van de sultan der Indiën op zijn olifant die door de tijd kan reizen van Royal de Luxe. Royal de Luxe is een Franse theatergroep die straattheater maakt met indrukwekkende mechanische marionetten. Hieronder een impressie van het bezoek van De Olifant aan Antwerpen.
Sunday – in my (at last!) summerly garden – I finished the fifth scene of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM. While I was embroidering the elephants with an Indian rug on their back, I was thinking of the Visit From The Sultan Of The Indies On His Time-Traveling Elephant of Royal de Luxe. {De ongelooflijke maar waar gebeurde voorgeschiedenis
Het verhaal is gebaseerd op verhalen van Jules Verne. Een Sultan der Indiën werd in al zijn dromen geplaagd door de aanwezigheid van een klein meisje dat door de tijd reisde. De sultan sliep niet meer, kreeg steeds hevigere angstaanvallen en kon zich niet meer bezighouden met staatszaken. Om hem te genezen moest men in het land der dromen op zoek gaan naar het meisje dat de sultan wakker hield. Een onbekende ingenieur construeerde een olifant die door de tijd kon reizen. De sultan ging aan boord met een deel van zijn hofhouding. Op zoek naar het meisje - dat in de loop van de nachtmerries veranderd was in een reusachtige marionet van bijna vijf meter hoog - was er maar één aanwijzing. De reuzin was dol op naaiwerk. Ze hield er bijvoorbeeld van om voertuigen op het asfalt, boten op de kaaien, treinen op de rails en soms enveloppen op de brievenbussen te naaien.
En vreemd, zoals enkel een liefdesverhaal vreemd kan zijn, voelde de olifant de behoefte om het meisje te ontmoeten. Op blije momenten ontlastte hij zich van honderden levende vogels die in de hemel verdwenen, vergezeld van een vrolijk trompetgeluid ... }

Ark van Noah (4): Kangoeroes / Kangaroos

Vandaag het vierde tafereeltje van Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM afgewerkt. Lynette, die in Australië woont, bedacht terecht dat Noah ook de kangoeroes gered heeft van de zondvloed. De eerste vraag die je je stelt is natuurlijk: 'hoe reisden die kangoeroes helemaal uit het Verre Australië naar de Ark?'. Op Internet vind je alle antwoorden op alle vragen. Of de antwoorden juist zijn, is iets anders. Zo willen ook creationistisch opgevoede kindertjes van hun ouders weten hoe pinguïns en kangoeroes in de Ark terecht kwamen. Hier staat waarom de kangoeroes niet helemaal vanuit Australië moesten hoppen. Tja, wel een heel 'creatieve' uitleg!
Toch stel ik mij bij het zien van kangoeroes meestal geen theologische vragen. Zoals waarschijnlijk veel mensen in Nederland, begin ik dan - meer down to earth - spontaan het liedje Kangoeroe eiland te neuriën. Ik kende eigenlijk alleen het refrein:

Op een kangoeroe eiland, waar je kangoeroes vindt
Zoekt een kangoeroemoeder naar d'r kangoeroekind

Maar hoe krijg ik de melodie nu weer UIT mijn hoofd?

Today I finished the fourth scene of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM. Lynette, who lives in Australia, rightly points out that Noah must also have rescued the kangaroos from the deluge. However, when seeing kangaroos I normally don’t pose myself theological questions. As probably many people in the Netherlands, I start - more down to earth – spontaneously humming the song Kangaroo Island. I only knew the chorus:

On a kangaroo island, where the kangaroos live,
A kangaroo mother was looking for her kangaroo child

But how can I get the melody OUT of my head?

Ark van Noah (3): Koeien / Cows

Het derde blok Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM is eindelijk af. Net op tijd voor ze de volgende publiceert begin juni. Het was weer heel prettig om te borduren. De koeien tussen de madeliefjes kijken je welgemutst aan, duidelijk onwetend van zoiets als bio-industrie. Het zien van een regenboog maakt mij altijd blij, het borduren ervan was helemaal een feest. Ik weet nu ook waarom wij de regenboog zien als een teken van verbond en van hoop voor de toekomst. Toen het water na de zondvloed langzaam verdween, sloot God een verbond met Noach waarin hij beloofde nooit meer een zondvloed over de aarde te brengen. Als teken laat hij een regenboog in de wolken verschijnen. Op het schilderij van Joseph Anton Koch (1768-1839) zie je Noach een dankoffer brengen met op de achtergrond een regenboog.
Ik weet zeker dat de geborduurde regenboog veel geluk zal brengen ...I finished the third block of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM just in time before she publishes the next one early June. It was again very pleasant to embroider. The cows between the daisies look cheerful, clearly unaware of such a thing as bio-industry. Seeing a rainbow always makes me happy, embroidering one was a treat. I know now why we see the rainbow as a sign of covenant and of hope for the future. When the water slowly disappeared after the deluge, God promised never again to visit a deluge upon all the world, and placed the first rainbow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant. On the painting by Joseph Anton Koch (1768-1839) you see a Landscape with Noah, offering a sacrifice of gratitude.
I am sure that the embroidered rainbow will bring good luck ...

Groene Ark

Ik hoop dit weekend het derde plaatje van Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM af te krijgen. Noah redde de dieren van de zondvloed. Maar hoe komt het eigenlijk dat de planten niet uitgestorven zijn? Daar moest ik aan denken toen ik bovenstaande tekening op de voorpagina van de VPRO-gids zag ...
Had Noah zakjes zaad in het ruim zitten zoals Ruurd Walrecht in zijn Groene Ark? Ruurd verzamelde zaden van honderden met uitsterven bedreigde gewassen. Want naast de rechte groene komkommer die de EU voorschrijft, zijn of waren er nog tientallen andere soorten. En heb je al eens van groenten als de Nijmeegse lange witte, de Delftse kortpoot of de Roermondse donkergroene Schelk gehoord? Donderdag (29 mei) is op Nederland 2 om 22:50 u Eeuwige Moes van Catherine van Campen te zien. De documentaire gaat over het werk van Ruurd. Volgens de VPRO-gids werd 'de schoonheid van een knolselderij nooit zo verpletterend in beeld gebracht'.
Misschien dat Lynette Anderson als vervolgproject een SAL met koppeltjes worteltjes, erwten en knolrapen kan ontwerpen?
I hope to finish the third block of Lynette Anderson's Noah's Ark Free Stichery BOM this weekend. Noah rescued the animals from the deluge. But did he also save the vegetables from extinction? This occurred to me when seeing the above drawing on the front page of the VPRO TV-guide ... Maybe Noah kept little bags with seeds in the hold as Ruurd Walrecht does in his Green Ark? Ruurd collected seeds of hundreds of endangered plants in order to saveguard biodiversity. As besides the straight green cucumber that the EU requires, there are or were dozens of other species. And have you ever heard of vegetables as the 'long white Nijmegen', 'Delfte kortpoot' or 'dark green Roermondse Schelk'? Catherine van Campen made the documentary Eternal Mash (broadcasted on television May 29 at 22:50 - Netherlands 2 at 22:50) about the work of Ruurd. According to the VPRO guide 'the beauty of a celeriac never was imaged so stunningly.’ Perhaps Lynette Anderson could - as a follow up SAL –design little pairs of carrots, peas and turnips?

Ark van Noah (2): Vredesduif / Peace dove

Het tweede tafereeltje van Lynnette Anderson's BOM, de Ark van Noah, is een duif. Ik vraag mij af waarom zij deze nu al publiceert - ze geeft zo eigenlijk de clou van het verhaal weg. In het verhaal van de zondvloed (Genesis, 6-9) besluit God die zag 'hoe zeer de boosheid van de mensen was toegenomen' alle levende wezens van de aardbodem weg te vegen. Alleen Noah, zijn familie en een koppeltje van alle dieren mogen de zondvloed overleven. Pas na maanden stopt de regen. Om de stand van zaken te peilen, laat Noah een duif los. 'Toen de duif tegen de avond bij hem terugkwam, droeg zij een groen olijfblad in de bek. Toen begreep Noach dat het water van de aarde weggezakt moest zijn.' De duif wordt zo het symbool voor de hoop op een nieuw en beter leven.
In gedachten laat ik 'mijn duif' uitvliegen naar Irak, Afghanistan, Darfur en Zimbabwe maar ook naar mensen in dit landje met zoveel wrok en boosheid in hun hart. Mijn duif kan het echter niet alleen, ik geef hem/haar een legertje vredesduiven mee.

The second scene of Lynnette Anderson's BOM, the Ark of Noah, is of a dove. I wonder why she published it already now - in a sense giving away the punch line of the story. In the story of the deluge (Genesis, 6-9) God, who "saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth," decided to sweep away all living creatures of the earth. Only Noah, his family and a couple of all animals are allowed to survive the deluge. The rain stops only many months later. In order to check the state of affairs, Noah lets loose a dove. ‘And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. " The dove thus became a symbol for hope of a new and better life.
In let 'my dove' loose to fly to Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur and Zimbabwe but also to people in this country with so much resentment and anger in their hearts. As it is to big a task for my dove alone, I give him / her an army of peace doves for company ...

Ark van Noah (1): Konijnen / Rabbits

Het is moeilijk, maar ik probeer zoveel mogelijk aan de verleiding te weerstaan om mee te doen aan SAL's. Ik heb het veel te druk en mijn kasten en laden puilen uit met onafgewerkte zaken. Maar toen ik deze konijntjes zag bij Quilts and Siggies, was ik meteen verkocht! Het ontwerp is van Lynette Anderson. Vanaf maart publiceert ze hier elke maand een nieuwe tekening. Het is bijzonder ontspannend en prettig om te doen - was het maar al april, dan kon ik weer verder! Op de foto met de borduurstrengetjes kan je zien hoe klein het borduurwerk is: 6 x 6 cm ...

I always try to resist the temptation of participating in a SAL. My life is to busy and my drawers are filled with unfinished work. But when I saw these little rabbits on Quilts and Siggies, I was sold immediately! The design is by Lynette Anderson. As of this month she publishes each month a new drawing here. It is so pleasant and relaxing to work on - I wish it were already April! On the photo with the embroidery threads skeins you can seen how small the finished work is: 2" x 2''.
